Dubai is five hours from Nairobi, has direct flights several times a day and manages to be a shopping trip, a beach holiday and a theme park in one. It is also the destination we are asked about most, so here is the honest version.
The visa
Kenyan passport holders need a visa in advance. It is issued electronically, usually within three to five working days, and must be applied for through a UAE-based sponsor such as an airline, hotel or licensed agency. We handle this as part of every Dubai package: you send us a passport copy and a photo, and we send back the approved visa. A 30-day tourist visa is standard. Keep in mind that the UAE occasionally pauses visa issuance for certain nationalities with little notice, which is one reason to book through an agency that will tell you the moment anything changes.
When to go
November to March is the comfortable season, with daytime temperatures in the mid-twenties. This is also when the Dubai Shopping Festival (late December to January) and Global Village run. April to October is hot, often above 40°C, but hotel prices drop sharply and everything indoors is air-conditioned, so a summer trip can be excellent value if you plan around the heat.
What five days really costs
Prices vary by season and hotel, but as a guide for one person sharing a room:
| Item | Budget | Mid-range |
|---|---|---|
| Return flight Nairobi – Dubai | USD 400 – 500 | USD 500 – 650 |
| Visa | USD 100 – 130 | USD 100 – 130 |
| 4 nights hotel with breakfast | USD 200 – 300 | USD 400 – 600 |
| Desert safari, Burj Khalifa, dhow cruise | USD 150 – 200 | USD 200 – 300 |
| Food, transport, extras | USD 150 | USD 300 |
That puts a sensible five-day trip at roughly USD 1,000 to 1,900 per person before shopping, which is why our 5-Day Dubai package starts where it does. Booking flights and hotels together in a package is almost always cheaper than booking them separately in peak season.
Tips from our clients
- Buy a Nol card on arrival and use the Metro; taxis add up fast.
- Book the Burj Khalifa for sunset at least a week ahead.
- Carry a light jacket. Malls and buses are cold.
- Friday brunch is a Dubai institution. Ask us for recommendations.
